Bacterial infection and antibiotic resistance
Summary
Lecture Objectives
- Infections caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria is a global public health threat, accounting for more than 40% of hospital acquired infections causing over 23,000 and 24,000 deaths in the United States and EU countries, respectively. Antibiotic resistance is also threatening public health in Korea, one of the countries with the high prescription rate of antibiotics among OECD countries. In 2014, superbacteria that are resistant to all existing antibiotics were found in Korea and a recent report confirmed that antibiotic resistance rates of major pathogenic bacteria are already seriously high in Korea showing 85.7% of methicillin resistance in clinically isolated Staphylococcus aureus.
This lecture is designed for graduate students in the field of biomedical science to provides basic knowledge of antibiotics along with mechanisms and development of antibiotics resistance.
